Interesting stuff! I like the idea of the characters becoming semi-mythic, like Robin Hood and King Arthur. I think that's exactly the kind of thing Joss was aiming for.

Fandom is a mixture of fascination and frustration.

Yeah, I think that's exactly what Joss was aiming for!

I think fanfic is pretty neat - I don't really get why some authors discourage it. Imitation being the sincerest form of flattery and all that.
