Newfoundland Gold

The Canadian men's curling team won gold today. What makes this notable - to me, at least - is that three of the team members are Newfoundlanders. Only one Newfoundlander has ever won a winter Olympics medal before and that was in 1944. Apparently, schools in St. John's were closed this afternoon so that kids could go home and watch the match. :-)

That makes 20! And I hear that Russ Howard may now be the oldest to win Gold or some random fact like that.

I just heard that we have chances for *eleven* more today. Not that we'll get that many, but still!

Everyone there must have been screaming and jumping when they won! Very exciting stuff. Canadians are certainly making a showing at the Olympics this time, especially when you consider our population base. Go team us!

There's gonna be a weekend-long party in St. John's this weekend!

It was an extremely well-played match by our team as well...there was a shot during the 6th end that was so phenomenal, everyone in my office started shouting and jumping up and down. My dad used to curl all the time, so I had to keep explaining the rules to everyone...but it was another great Olympic moment for Canada.

Also, did you see that Canadian woman set a record for most medals won by women from one country at an Olympic winter games? We rock!

I saw bits of it on replay last night. Good to hear the Newfoundland accents in the interviews afterwards. :-)

Klassen (sp?) just moved into the lead in the last speed skating race. She might get another one yet!
