I'm reading an article in the scientific journal Nature on the discovery of methane emissions by plants. This is big news for the climate change folks as, if confirmed, it's a natural source of an important greenhouse gas that was previously unknown.

Anyway, one of the sentences reads: "The main [sources of methane] previously recognized were microbial activity in wetlands and the eructations of ruminant animals."

Eructations. Heh. Scientists do like to sanitize things, don't they?

Well I suppose you could confuse people and even keep your "guilt" hidden as you apologize with, "Oh my, so sorry for my eructation!" No one would know what you meant. I'm easily amused...LOL

Distracting people with a big word is always a good plan. Personally, my favourite word is 'absquatulate' - I always wanted to use it in an essay and send my teacher running for a dictionary. :-)
