Xander Appreciation Day!

Title: His Finest Hour

Length: Ficlet - 170 words

He’d known her for as long as he could remember. Maybe longer.

She’d been the one who had laughed at the right times – like whenever he was entering another bid for the title of class clown – and hadn’t at the wrong times – like when he’d accidentally wet his pants in kindergarten. He’d been the one who had protected her from bullies, shared his Twinkies with her at lunchtime, and made sure she wasn’t picked last when choosing teams for dodge ball.

She was grown up now. No longer the shy and nervous schoolgirl, she was a woman. She had power beyond her wildest dreams. She’d lost a lover. Somewhere, she’d taken a wrong turn in the road. She wasn’t crayon-breaky Willow anymore; she was scary veiny Willow. But it didn’t matter. Not to him. She was in pain and, even if it was the last thing he ever did, he was going to try to help her.

Because he’d loved her for as long as he could remember. Maybe longer.

Xander entered the library, his face approximately the same colour of green as his shirt. He hadn’t been feeling well for several days and he just didn’t seem to be able to throw it off. He slumped dejectedly into one of the chairs around the table.

“Xander. What did the doctor say?”

He sighed. “She said I have trichinosis.”

“Trichinosis? But you can only get trichinosis from undercooked pork… oh.”

Xander dropped his head into his hands and groaned.

Willow looked thoughtful. “Wow. If the hyenas had possessed me – well, I’d have a hard time explaining that to my dad.”
