Oh Dear Lord

Having been hiding out in my apartment all day, I've just now caught up on the news. Hundreds feared dead from Hurricane Katrina. I dearly hope that's an overestimate.

It just keeps getting worse. Now they're talking about thousands possibly being dead and people not being able to return to their homes for one to two months. New Orleans is basically uninhabitable. I can't imagine how they're even going to begin to clean up the mess.

Can't anything good happen this year?

Having an atmospheric science background, I know that people have been saying for years that global warming will result in more catastrophic weather events. More droughts, more tornadoes, more Level 5 hurricanes. Like this one. God forbid that this should become commonplace.
