Random Grammar Question

Is there a rule for when to use "because" and when to use "as" in a sentence? This would be in a context such as 'The cat ran down the street (as/because) it was being chased by a dog.'

Serenity Screenings

Joss Whedon's birthday is coming up later this week. To mark the occasion and, heck, just to watch the movie again, there are some 47 screenings of Serenity planned worldwide on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We tried to get a screening going here in Ottawa, but it didn't work out. :-( However, we'll be playing the DVD in the games room of a local comic book store and passing the hat for Equality Now on Saturday night. I don't think there's anyone on my flist in Ottawa, but if you want more details, drop me a line.
