2. I'll ask you five questions.
3. You'll post the answers on your own lj, along with these rules.
4. If anyone replies asking you for five questions, you'll ask them.

[livejournal.com profile] cindermom interviewed me:

1. Who is your all time favorite figure skater (or pair) and why?

Ooo, that’s a tough one. How to pick just one above the rest? I guess I’d better go with my first love in figure skating. I was only a very casual watcher of skating until the Lillehammer Olympics. While most of the world tuned in to watch the outcome of the Tonya Harding/Nancy Kerrigan fiasco, I was busy being mesmerised by a short, stocky up-and-comer with the unlikely name of Elvis Stojko. His programs that year suited him perfectly: his short program was set to a fast techno piece, while his long program was skated to the music from Dragon and complemented his long-standing interest in martial arts (he has a black belt in karate). I liked his go-for-it attitude and the non-traditional style of his skating. In later years, I grew to wish that he’d try to extend himself a little more and not skate to macho movie soundtracks quite so often—he kind of got stuck in a rut. I’ve had lots of other favourites since then, both Canadian and not so much, but Elvis will always be my first love.

2. You're about to make a big move. What are you most looking forward to about life in your new place?

Getting the packing and unpacking over with. :-) Seriously, I’d have to say a sense of home. I’ve moved a ridiculous number of times, have lived alone for most of my adult life, and haven’t lived in a house (as opposed to an apartment) for decades. My parents are divorced (although enough time has passed that they’re now pretty good friends again), so I don’t have the old family home to visit. While there are some good things about living by yourself, having no one but the walls to greet you at the end of the day gets a little depressing. Being able to watch a movie with Jim or play a board game with the kids without having to get into a car and drive away afterwards will be pretty nice.

3. You're having a dinner party and can invite any five people, living or dead. Who would you invite and why?

I guess the typical answer is to list five people I look up to in one way or another (or possibly lust after :-). I’m kind of shy, though, and would have a hell of a time trying to think of anything intelligent to say to any of them. I'd spend the entire time stammering and blushing. However, if I were going to go that route, I'd say Katharine Hepburn (because she was a neat, neat lady), Joss Whedon (well, duh), physicist Richard Feynman (fascinating guy), Carl Sagan (his books were what persuaded me to go into science in the first place), and my great-great-aunt Charlotte (who died when I was seven years old; I never really got to know her and she sounds like she was a really cool person).

OTOH, if I wanted an evening of comfort, laughter, and mild drunkenness, I'd say my old friends Rob, Dan and Elli, Rod, and Jim--five of my favourite people, four of whom I have not seen for too many years too long.

4. What is your favorite BtVS episode and why?

Fool For Love. 'Cause it's all about Spike. And the backstory they gave him was inspired.

Once More With Feeling is more fun to sing to, though.

5. What was your first piece of fanfiction and what inspired you to write it?

My first fic was The First Light of Day. I'd been reading a lot of stories over at All About Spike, and I really liked [livejournal.com profile] redeem147's ficlets, particularly Four Wishes. I liked the way she could take a bit of canon and twist it in an unexpected way. For some reason, the image of the demigod in his chair of fire stuck with me, so I wrote a Powers That Be ficlet.
