Haven’t been around these parts much lately. ::brushes cobwebs off screen:: When I lived alone, I had lots of time, y’know, alone, which meant lots of time to fill with TV, LJ, fic-reading, and whatnot. Now that I share a house full-time with Jim and Daughter o’ Jim, and part-time with LittlestJim and MiddleJim, I find that most of my waking hours are spoken for in one way or another. Which is good for someone waging war against the creeping shadows of depression, but not so good for keeping up with my online life.

And then I log on to LJ last night and find that all hell has broken lose. Meep. Like so many others, I too have a long-dormant account at GreatestJournal (same username), but I’d really rather stay here. It’s comfy, it’s familiar, and besides, it took me ages to get my banner up. But whither thou goest, I will follow. I guess I’ll see what happens next.

Drama is in the air these days, it seems. Jim and I acquired another daughter last week: one of Daughter o’ Jim’s friends had a ripping row with her father and is staying with us for the next week or so until her term ends and she returns to her mother’s house out of town. Oddly, she has the same given name as Daughter o’ Jim, which has resulted in a considerable number of "Who’s on first?" conversations. Confusing!

Jim and I went to Ottawa for a long weekend last weekend for post-birthday celebrations with my now-slightly-older sister and for my ex-choir’s spring concert. The concert was good, and I was presented with five carnations--one for each year that the choir has been in existence (I founded it)--and a song was sung in my honour. It was quite touching. On the rather more unhappy side, there have been quite a number of conflicts between the executive and conductor this year, with the end result that his contract is not being renewed. I have mixed feelings about this: he was a really nice guy, and we went through this just a couple of years ago with someone else. I hope the group doesn’t become known as that choir that keeps firing its conductors.

In happier news, we finally finished the clean up and repainting of Jim’s old house, and it was sold in record time. Jim spent last Friday evening hauling stuff over to the new house before we left for Ottawa, Daughter o’ Jim and her namesake did the final vacuuming on Saturday, the agent showed it to one (and only one) prospective buyer on Sunday, and we had an offer for the full asking price by Monday night. It’s conditional on financing and a house inspection, but that’s pretty standard. We’ll know if it’s a go early next week.

Summer has finally made it to Peterborough: it’s been hot and humid for the past two days, the pool has warmed up to 70°F, and we’re having a dramatic thunderstorm even as I type this. I’m hoping for a nice weekend--I want to plant tomatoes in the whiskey barrels that we bought two weeks ago. And I have to dig up the front flowerbed and figure out what to put in it. We have two black walnut trees in the front yard, and black walnuts like to kill many other plant species, including tomatoes (hence the whiskey barrels). I can definitively state that hostas and forget-me-nots will grow near black walnuts, as they’re the only thing besides grass and dandelions currently alive in said flowerbed, but I think hostas would thrive on Mars, so that’s not really much of a revelation. Further experimental results will be reported as they come in.

I’m off to Pembroke for a couple of days next week--I’m helping out with sturgeon-netting, of all things. I’ve never seen a sturgeon in real life before--all I really know about them is that they're large (though not all are that big!) and rather fierce-looking. I’ll have a couple of quiet evenings in a hotel, during which time I hope to make some progress on the WIPs. The final chapters of the fic previously known as Untitled Spuffy Fic are in the works, as is the second chapter of Wish You Were Here. I'm feeling the weight of unfinished WIPs and I will get them done.

Unless I fall out of the boat and get eaten by a sturgeon, in which case you'll have to ask [livejournal.com profile] flurblewig, [livejournal.com profile] sunnyd_lite, or [livejournal.com profile] yourlibrarian what happens next :-).
