(no subject)

Jim and I went out for a little while last night for a free concert by Nazareth. (Side note to anyone comtemplating the same: I know very little of their music, but even I could tell that the lead singer's voice is more or less shot.) On the way home, we came upon a gruesome sight: someone had run over a cat. Its back end was crushed, but the poor thing was still alive. We and two other cars pulled over; one of the other women said she'd been behind the truck that did it. Apparently, the cat had been dragged underneath the vehicle for a good 20 metres, shrieking all the way. The driver of the truck was not one of the people who pulled over.

We carried the cat off the road and put a blanket over it while we started calling veterinarians. It was clear that nothing could be done for it, but obviously we couldn't just let it suffer a lingering death. About 20 minutes later, someone from the Humane Society came and picked it up. They took it back to a vet's to be evaluated and probably put it to sleep shortly thereafter.

It was a dark gray cat and a dark night. I'm sure it was an accident, but how could the driver not stop after he'd hit it?

Battlestar Galactica

I was just sifting through some old posts and came across the ones I made when I first started watching Battlestar Galactica. I noticed in the miniseries that the viper pilots all touched a photograph before going on a mission and I wondered who it was. I forgot to mention that Katee Sackhoff answered this question at Polaris earlier this month: apparently, it's a photo of a survivor surveying the devastation on Caprica after the initial attack of the Cylons, and the viper pilots use it as a touchstone to remember what they're fighting for.
