I haven't really read very many Mary Sue stories - maybe I've been lucky in the authors I've chosen. I did follow one of the links in the story and read a dreadfully Mary Sue-ish Star Trek: TNG story. If that sort of story was your introduction to fanfic - well, you'd never read it again, that's for sure.
