desoto_hia873: (I've Seen Serenity)

It was a very long 30 hours from the time I left Ottawa yesterday until I got back late this afternoon, but really worth it. I left around 2 pm yesterday, had to drive to Peterborough to pick Jim up, and got stuck on Hwy 7 when the police closed the highway for about 20 minutes because of an accident. The ONE time I had a schedule to follow - it figures! (Of course, my troubles paled in comparison to those of the people in the ambulance, so I did try to keep some semblance of perspective about the whole thing.) Finally made it to Peterborough, fetched Jim, took off again, and arrived in Toronto with just enough time to drop the car off at the hotel and walk back to the theatre.

I'd bought eight extra tickets for members of the Canadian Browncoats, so the first task was to find the people I'd promised tickets to. And what a nice group of people they were! Two girls from southern Ontario knitted me a Jayne touque as a thank you, another refused to accept the change I owed her so I got a 'tip', and another fellow made me a Blue Sun t-shirt. I didn't get into town in time for the shindig but got to meet lots of Browncoats in line - including the wonderful [livejournal.com profile] redeem147 and the lovely [livejournal.com profile] sunnyd_lite. I was sorry to have missed [livejournal.com profile] blond_bear in the crowd, but we have a date for SFX so all is not lost.

After distributing my tickets to their rightful owners, we stood in line for about an hour getting to know one another and admiring the costumes of other people in the crowd. Someone had made life-size cardboard figures of Mal, Zoe, and Simon, so we posed for pictures with them. There was a big banner to sign wishing Joss happy birthday and someone passed around tattoos with BDHs on them. They let us into the theatre around 9:30 pm and Jim and I got good seats right next to [livejournal.com profile] sunnyd_lite and our newfound friend Chris from the Canadian Browncoats. After everyone was seated, we sang the theme from Firefly and also Happy Birthday to Joss. We had been discussing which of the BDHs might grace us with their presence, but Chris was quite sure that it was all rumour based on nothing and that no one would be there. We'd found out from others that Joss was in California and Nathan in Phoenix, and we already knew that Jewel was in Vancouver.

Eventually, the lights went down, a spotlight appeared on the screen, and the next thing I heard was Chris gasp when Sean Maher (Simon) walked into the spotlight. [livejournal.com profile] sunnyd_lite and I squeed in unison, and I poked Jim in the ribs and squeaked "Look! We got Simon!!". Chris boggled some more while [livejournal.com profile] sunnyd_lite and I bounced in our seats like the mature, refined adults that we are. :-)

Sean welcomed us all, then came and sat in the audience to watch the film himself. Afterwards, he scooted back down to the front and sat down at a table to sign autographs. We all got a Serenity poster (which he signed), a short program, and a keychain. He also posed for pictures for those who asked (and [livejournal.com profile] sunnyd_lite and I did ask - pics to come). He was very relaxed and personable, and seemed to be enjoying himself. He looks just like he does onscreen - well, except smaller since the screen makes him look 20 feet tall.

After all that, [livejournal.com profile] sunnyd_lite, Jim, and I went back to Montana's (where the pre-movie shindig had been held) and met up another Ottawa flan who had taken the train down that day. Then [livejournal.com profile] sunnyd_lite got very brave and went back to the theatre to see if Sean wanted to come and have a beer with us. He said no, as he had to catch a plane home early the next morning and it was by then already going on for 1 am. Instead, she returned with Heather, the Canadian Browncoats list mom, and Chris, and we sat and yakked until nearly 2 am.

And a grand time was had by all. I am *exhausted* (and I have four dragon boat races in the next two days), but ever so glad I went.

NB: If you comment, please do so without any spoilers so that no one accidentally reads something they don't want to. I'll make another post later this weekend about the movie itself.

Bed now.

Keep the faith! Most people seem to think that there are more screenings to come. And if Edmonton gets one, you might get Nathan since that's where he's from. (Nathan. Swoon.)

Join the Browncoats at www.serenitymovie.com and make noise on the message board. Heather (the Canadian Browncoats list mom - she seems to have contacts in significant places) said that's what got us the Toronto and Vancouver screenings.

Yay! I'm glad you had so much fun - and best of luck with the races! Your poor body will punish you for this :)

Every time I think "We got Simon!", I still grin like a fool. :-)

See ya again in August. How many days?

Hi Kristina!

This is Hollis, she-who-refuses-change-from-those-who-do-her-amazing-favours. ;-)

I found your journal through your post on the CdnBC group and I just wanted to again say thanks for all your help in making Thursday a night to remember. I've tried summing it up a bunch of times (on LJ, through the eGroup, to friends) and it always seems to fall a little flat and not give credit to the true experience. One reassurance is that at least those who were there, with us, know how we feel.

Rambling aside -- sorry about that! -- and because I don't have nearly enough Firefly/Serenity flans on my flist (try saying that over and over again), I was just letting you know that I was adding you.

And again, thank you!! :-)

Hi Hollis!

Always glad to have another flist flan. :-) Feel free to ramble anytime.

It is hard conveying Thursday's excitement in writing, isn't it? I know I haven't done it justice. I kept flashing back to seeing Simon suddenly appear in the spotlight all weekend - gave me a bunch of warm fuzzies, I can tell you. And I can't wait to see the film again.

If you want to grab the 'I've seen Serenity - Toronto preview' icon, please do. I have mbad icon-making skilz, but that one turned out reasonably well.

Friending you back now.
