Yesterday was our second delivery of organic produce from
By The Bushel. This time we got one grapefruit, several onions, a head of Boston lettuce, a bag of baby spinach, two "watermelon radishes" (I don't even know what those are), half a cabbage, several oranges, an avocado, two beets, and a purple carrot.
Yes, a
purple carrot. Who knew such a thing even existed? I plan on using it in a yummy low-fat coleslaw with Asian dressing that I found in one of the
Looney Spoons cookbooks.
My bedroom is in a bit of a shambles at the moment because it's having a facelift. I think it used to be the sitting room in the original house, because it has cove moulding, a textured plaster ceiling, and no overhead light. The lack of a light was a bit of a nuisance because the room is located at the end of a long hall, and I'd have to stumble through the dark room to find the lamp in the back corner. The electrician finally came yesterday and put in a combination ceiling fan and light, so now I can actually use the light switch by the door. Also, the ceiling fan will be nice next summer as our house doesn't have air conditioning.
There's also some plastering going on. A couple of months ago, I noticed a rather bad smell whenever I stood near my doorway. It got progressively worse over the next week or so, and we eventually concluded that something had fallen down inside the wall and died. About a week before the smell started, I was home and reading in bed when I heard something in the ceiling go skitter-skitter-skitter-THUMP and then a metallic clang. It was loud enough that I thought maybe a squirrel had fallen down one of heating ducts and emerged through one of the grates. I actually got up to see if there was anything running down the hall. But there wasn't.
So we were a little worried that a dead squirrel was making the bad smell and that it was going to get a whole lot worse. We determined that the odour was coming out through my light switch, so we knew which wall it was in and started drilling holes. Eventually, we found three dead mice--two very old and dried-up ones and one fresh one--one beam over from the light switch and hauled them out. I doused the inside of the wall with Lysol and the smell went away. However, that left us with four largeish holes in the plaster wall.
The electrician had to make another hole to run wires up to the ceiling for my light anyway, so it seemed like a good time to get it done. Also, the original doorframe leading into the house was still present in a corner of my room--it had long since been boarded up and painted, but not all that well and it was drafty. And having a doorframe leading to nowhere seemed kind of silly, so they've fixed that as well. Now it's just a (non-drafty) wall in dire need of painting. But I guess that'll have to wait until the spring because plaster walls are cold and paint doesn't stick to cold walls very well.
Tonight we're going out with the boys to pick a Christmas tree. Christmas isn't usually a huge deal to me, but I have to admit I'm looking forward to having our very own tree and getting to decorate our very own house. :-)
