I'm a dog person. I don't have anything against cats, but usually I like dogs better. Which isn't to say that I haven't met some cats of which I've been very fond--I used to work at a vet's and at a kennel, and I got to know some of the regulars and I can still remember their faces and personalities some twenty years later.

Possibly my view of cats has been coloured by the memories of my mother's last cat, who bit and scratched and considered the dining room her litter box. She was a cute little thing, but, man, she was a bitca.

So imagine my surprise at finding myself in a PetSmart at lunch today looking at their cats from the Ottawa Humane Society. There was a mostly black (because all my pets--even my horse in high school--have been black) two-year-old female there who was very playful. She couldn't get enough of my keychain or my glasses or my finger (but she didn't scratch!) and she even licked me.

I am this -> <- close to calling the store and asking them to put her on hold for me.

*sigh*

I think her name should be Mabel.

I have 9 cats and a stray living on my porch. They were all cats that someone either dumped or whose mother was dumped. Therefore, I am a big supporter of all animals ending up in a loving home that will not abandon them... that means YOU!

Wow, ten cats! I think I'd be evicted from my apartment if I did that, but good for you. The Ottawa Humane Society doesn't ever have many dogs, but they have an overabundance of cats at the moment. People must think they're more disposable or something. :-(

Like you I'm more of a dog person than a cat person. Which is good since Hubby and Mom are both allergic to cats. Deathly allergic. But I have had quite a few cats that I've befriended, or rather they've befriended me as cats do. These were mostly friends' cats.

Mabel is a lovely name for a cat.

My father is allergic to both cats and dogs, but he's used to taking antihistamines when he comes over. I've never had any allergies ::knocks on wood:: and hopefully won't start!

Well, in case you were wavering- DO IT. I love dogs as well as cats but I am an apartment person. I have a kitty, I had a kitty before her and two before that one - and I will have another one after this one (which will hopefully not be for a long time yet.)

Mabel sounds like just a perfect cat for you. YOu remember how awful your mother's last cat behaved, so Mabel will not behave like that. With cats, it takes a little more to outthink them, but it CAN be done.

The local humane society is overrun with cats at the moment. The kittens are always the first to go, of course--adults cats have to wait a lot longer. So I went for an adult. (Also, as she's a fairly large cat, I'll be less likely to go home and find her hanging from the curtains!)

Oh, you got her? Excellent! I subscribe to the "get the ugliest cat" philosophy, and it has never steered me wrong. My latest cat is a battle-scarred old rescured stray, and he is the most loving cat.
