Not So Zoomy

Still alive. Just... quiet. Not a good time of year for me. I wish the Olympics were still on. They were a great distraction.

My mother is in the U.K. at the moment. My father called me today to tell me that she'd flown over on Zoom, which means that she currently doesn't have a way of getting home. Fortunately, she's staying with a friend, so she doesn't have to rack up hotel bills along with forking out money for another ticket.

My aunt, who lives in California, is at the Democratic convention this week. Must be interesting having a front row seat to history in the making. Perhaps someone who knows more about American politics and Obama can explain to me: why didn't he choose Hillary for a running mate?

Hillary, while I have a lot of respect for her, carries a lot of baggage. Obama's platform is all about change, and Hillary and Bill (because they're a package deal) harken back to the 90's (as good as they were ;-)). Biden brings in the blue collar democrats without all the negatives that Clinton potentially carries. Plus, would Obama really want Bill and Hillary looking over his shoulder for the next 4 years? :-)

In addition to the above: Hillary wanted to be president. Despite many pleas from her own supporters, she never gave the slightest indication that'd she'd settle for the veep slot.

I heard Virgin Airlines and British Airlines are offering special one-way fares for those stranded by Zoom. Or better yet, maybe she had travel insurance?

Basically, it turned into a grudge match and what they each ultimately wanted was different. Obama needed to pick someone who was closer in line to his ideas but still different enough to court the Independent voters who may or may not be leaning towards him.
