Do you know if you are using S1 or S2? (Go to your Personal Info page - where you can add interests?- and it should tell you.)
Also, make sure your banner is on a website like photobucket, and that you have the link. And the general idea of its size, like, 300 pixels by 500 pixels, etc.
At the moment, it's S2 but I can change this - I have to make all the colours match anyway. The banner is uploaded to my LJ scrapbook or whatever they're calling it these days. So it's ready to go!
See, I'm on S1 (old skool) which some find cumbersome, but you type in text that basically says: banner here, make it stick/scroll/etc.
With S2, it depends on which custom page you use. Go h e r e to see if your particular style supports banner (which I'm sure it does.)
It should be a simple matter of going to the customize page, giving the link to the image, then indicating if you want the image to scroll, etc. S2 asks you questions and does the code work for you.
Feel free to tell me which one and I'll help you look up the info.
At the moment, I'm using Components. I can get the image up as a background image and tell it where to put it and to scroll, but everything sits on top of the picture. I can't figure out how to move everything down so that the banner is visible at the top instead of behind. (Am I making sense?)
I added the brackets. Now, the idea is to select repeat, center, and/or scroll - combined with center - to get the banner to move like you'd like. If you want a space around the image, that goes in the margin 0px locales.
Now to get the text to shift down... (it's hard to figure out for your style, I know how to do it in S1...) Crap. No wonder you're frustrated.
Lemme do some more digging. i'm looking at s2component's FAQ page, if you want to see if you can find anything about shifting the text boxes down...
* Go to Customize Journal -> Advanced Customization Center -> Your Layers * Scroll down to "Create layout-specific layer," select: Type: Theme, Layout: Boxer * Paste this in:
Um. Or something to that effect. Actually, I'm not really sure, either. *sighs* You're not dumb, this stuff is just ridiculously complicated. They really need to make something that makes it easy to put banners on.
I just got off the phone - really, I'm not ignoring you!
You'd definitely think that putting up a banner would be easier to do than it is. If I can't figure it out, I'll give S1 a shot. I'm a bit brain-dead at the moment - I'll try again tomorrow.
Thanks so much for trying to help figure it out. I have such a nice flist. :-)
It worked! I still don't get what I did exactly, but it worked. Woot! I have a banner! It clashes horribly with the colour scheme I currently have in place, but yay!
Thanks again for taking the time to help. BTW, I love the banner on your journal. :-)
If you get some helpful links through e-mail or IM, would you share them? I have a banner and I'd like to actually redo my style (since LJ refuses to recognize my layout any more), but I have no idea where to start, either.
trkkr47's link here (http://trkkr47.seeking-solace.com/layoutinstructions.txt) did the trick. I'm not exactly sure how it does what it does, but it worked! Yay! Now I need to fix my colour scheme. I wish I had more of an eye for these things...

Date: 2005-04-25 03:51 am (UTC)As I mentioned, I use S1. It seems old school and outmoded, but seems far more simplistic to me than S2.
But you rule for looking up all the stuff.
