Post subject: A Message for the Holidays

---------------------------------------------------------------------

So, here we are. So much has happened recently and I feel this is the time to pause and reflect before the New Year starts slapping us around.

We made the movie, it has come out on DVD just in time for that odd little Christian holiday where they celebrate not being fed to lions or something. It is number one on Amazon, and the old Firefly set is crawling back up the charts like a thirsty man in the desert towards a mirage. Does this make us better than anyone else? You bet it does. But it's not the kind of better than that causes you to look down your nose at anyone. It's more the kind that lets you pat someone patiently on the arm and say in a sanctimonious tone, "Mm hm, it's alright. I'll get you a copy of the movie and you can be cool, too. Just not quite as cool as me because I've been a Browncoat for sometime, now."

If you are like me, you watch the movie to assure yourself the future will be safe, you watch the extras to see old friends, and you listen to Joss' commentary and shed a little tear over good times. Waht's that? You don't cry in the commentary? Well, just have an emotion chip installed, you robot, and refill your eye bags with saline.

Be well, Browncoats. Aim high, as we have all learned that nothing is impossible (except getting Jewel and Morena to stop fighting over who is prettier when we all know it's me). Happy Holidays.

Spamalot

I learned this week that Alan Tudyk is only going to be in Spamalot until the end of November. So I've starting dropping very broad hints to Jim that a *really* good birthday present would be a weekend in New York and tickets to the show.

I don't think it'll work, but a girl's gotta dream, right?

I can't believe I didn't notice this:

I'm watching another episode of Nikita - Third Party Ripoff - and who should be a guest star but Mark Lutz (Groosalug). Can't get away from the Jossverse(s).

Well, that was neat. I'm working my way through my Nikita S3 DVDs and just watched an episode guest-starring Juliet Landau. She was wearing a particularly ugly wig and I didn't recognise her at first, but, yep, that was her. My, she's a tiny little thing.

Nikita was a Canadian show that always pretended not to be. It was filmed in Toronto. At one point, Juliet's character had to set a detonator using a three digit code. The numbers? 416. Toronto's area code. :-)

Oh, and she had to infiltrate an organisation called the Alliance. The Jossness is everywhere.

SFX

So, yes, I'm alive and made it to and back from SFX in one piece and had a great time! Also a very tiring time - I was pretty much a zombie at work yesterday, so threw in the towel altogether and stayed home today. Which at least gave me the chance to download pictures from my camera and get them into posting shape. Priorities!

SFX report under the cut. Not for the faint of modem. )

Happy Birthday to James Marsters!

(C'mon, I had to say it. :-)

And many more...

Oh yeah...

...meant to say that I saw an ad for David Boreanaz's new show Bones while watching TV last night. It's gonna take a while before my brain stops wondering why Angel is playing doctor.

Kids?

E!Online's Kirsten talks to James Marsters here about the possibility of a Spike movie and also his kids. Kids? As in, plural? Since when?!?

Nick Brendon has an audioblog. Who knew?

E!Online has an article on new fall shows starring Nicholas Brendan, David Boreanaz, Alyson Hannigan, Christian Kane, and Seth Green here. I predict that I'll be watching alot of TV in September.

I watched last week's Veronica Mars and House tonight. House, incidentally, does not appear to be showing in the right order. I saw my first episode three weeks ago - it was Maternity (1.04). Tonight's installment was Detox (1.11).

Anyway, it was a night of 'Where have I seen that actor?' Amanda Seyfried (Lilly from VM) was a guest star on House, as was Mark Harelik (he played Count Kurushu in AtS's Waiting in the Wings.) I've been trying to remember where I'd seen VM regular Sydney Tamiia Poitier before and finally discovered tonight that she played Rebecca on S1 of Joan of Arcadia. Now if I could only remember just who Rebecca was...

Also, Harry Hamlin was on VM. He has lot alot of weight since I last saw him.

It was all very confusing. Blessings on those who created IMDb else I might have gone mad (madder) by now.

Speaking of Joan of Arcadia, I think I missed the season finale *again* (I never saw last year's either). And I have a vague feeling that I read somewhere that it's been cancelled. Does anyone know if that's true?

ETA: I heard today that The Inside has not been renewed for the fall. Tim Minear just can't buy a break these days, it seems. And no more weekly installments of Adam Baldwin. Le sigh.

I just watched an episode of Nikita with Gina Torres in it. She was a bad guy. In prison. Falling in love with Nikita and kissed her full on the lips, even. Kewl.

OK, maybe not so much a collision as a gentle bump.

Firefly

This weekend I (finally) started watching the Firefly DVDs that I got for Christmas. I know I watched one of the episodes on TV when it was airing, but I didn't recognise anything so I guess the episode I saw wasn't the first one. Which may have explained my confusion and why I gave up on the series so quickly the first time around.

I'm finding it more interesting this time (now that I know what's going on - that always helps), though it's kind of weird seeing "Jasmine" getting into fisticuffs and "Caleb" not being a complete jerk. It's also a bit odd watching "Ron Harris" from Barney Miller as a minister on a space ship. :-)

In other actor connections, I know that Joss likes to reuse his favourites, so when the actor playing Lawrence Dobson started looking familiar, I thought maybe I'd seen him before. I even figured out from where by the end of the episode: he was Richard in AtS S1's The Bachelor Party. I checked him out on IMDB and discovered that he was also Ken in BtVS's S2 Anne. Which has been bugging me forever - every time I've seen that episode, I kept trying to figure out who he was. For a while, I even wondered if it was Andy Hallet - I was getting pretty desperate.

Further IMDB reading revealed to me that there are four actors who have been on all three of Joss Whedon's shows: Jonathan M. Woodward (which I already knew - Knox, Holden, and Tracey in a FF episode that I haven't seen yet), Carlos Jacott (Lawrence Dobson, Richard, and Ken), Jeff Ricketts (the council thug Weatherby in both BtVS S4 and AtS S1, the spider monster in AtS S4, and Blue Glove #1 in FF), and, most amusing of all, Andy Umberger (Dortmunder Captain in FF, Dr. Ronald Meltzer in AtS S1 I Fall to Pieces, and - hee! - D'Hoffryn in BtVS).

I had no idea that Dr. Ronald Meltzer and D'Hoffryn were one and the same. This amuses me beyond the telling.

It's always fun seeing Jossverse alumni in other shows. Amber Tamblyn (Joan in Joan of Arcadia) was Dawn's friend Janice in BtVS, of course. Last week's JoA had another BtVS alumnus - Nancy Lenehan, who played the annoying Pat in BtVS S3's Dead Man's Party.

Small things amuse.

I watched Once More With Feeling with Joss's commentary last night - it was pretty interesting. He was so happy that they got Hinton Battle to play Sweet. I, of course, had no clue who Hinton Battle is, so I went on IMDB to see what else he's done. And, Good Lord, he was The Cat in Red Dwarf! That's hysterical!

On another note, I read somewhere that Brian Bonsall - Andrew Keaton in Family Ties and Worf's son on Star Trek: TNG - was on an episode of Buffy. I haven't been able to find out which episode, though - anyone know?
