So, yes, I'm alive and made it to and back from SFX in one piece and had a great time! Also a very tiring time - I was pretty much a zombie at work yesterday, so threw in the towel altogether and stayed home today. Which at least gave me the chance to download pictures from my camera and get them into posting shape. Priorities!
I took the train down from Ottawa on Friday morning and got into town early enough to have a late lunch with a friend (Hi P!) that I hadn't seen for a long time. Then I went down to the convention centre, admiring all the costumes that were in evidence along the way. SFX was only one of the events going on that weekend - the con also included Horror, Gaming, and Anime. I had no idea who most of the people were dressed up as, but was pretty sure I was going in the right direction. And, hey, they made my obsessive self look normal. For which I'm always grateful.
The first task was to stand in line to get my various passes. This didn't actually take too long as I was early, but then I was sent out to stand in the entrance line which stretched a good half kilometre from the door. Adam Baldwin's Q&A was to start at 5 pm, so I waited in the unmoving line watching 4 pm, 4:15 pm, and 4:30 pm tick by, fidgeting all the while, until I gave into my increasing uneasiness that I was going to miss it and went back into the lobby. There, I clued into the fact that the ginormous line-up was for the exhibition hall upstairs and there was a much shorter line-up for Theatre 4 where Adam was going to be. Sure would have been nice if one of the hired con organisers had informed me of that!
A little while later, we all started to file into Theatre 4 and it quickly became apparent that it was WAY too small for all the people who wanted to attend. Bodies were piled like cordwood in the aisle and in every corner. Adam came in and was a little taken aback by the size of the audience, I think. With no regard for the fire code, he encouraged even more people to squish in and then asked that the doors be left open so that those in the hall could hear and ask questions. My tiny camera with almost no zoom was really not up to the task of taking his picture from where I was sitting - this was the best I could do:

Adam was very friendly and personable - he brought a bunch of trading cards for us, but I wasn't close enough to the front to get one before they were all gone. He seemed quite delighted by the number of people wearing Jayne hats, many of which were knitted by one of the Canadian Browncoats. Someone asked him if he thought Jayne's hat indicated a possible Canadian heritage on Earth-that-was (for the non-Canadians reading this, think Bob and Doug MacKenzie toques) and he actually got that and laughed about it for a while. Some random tidbits from the Q&A: Nathan drew the cast together and turned them into a big family during the filming; Nathan and Jewel love tormenting one another; Jayne having a crush on Inara was a running joke on the set, and Adam tortured Joss incessantly by throwing in lines about Inara when he wasn't supposed to; and he doesn't see Firefly returning to television, but said that a sequel to Serenity was possible if this film makes $80 million worldwide. SO GO AND SEE IT. TWICE.

After the Q&A, I fought my way upstairs to the exhibition area and eventually found the Serenity Fantable. There I met up with various Canadian Browncoats and was really impressed with the display they had put together. I knew we were getting lots of swag in the form of pins, keychains, and mini-posters from Universal, but I had no idea just how MUCH swag until I saw the stacks of boxes. I hung out at the table for the rest of the evening, and whenever I was free on Saturday and Sunday, and it was quite honestly the best part of the weekend. Not that I didn't like seeing Adam and James (what am I, nuts?), but it was just that much fun. The table was non-stop busy and we got to talk to hundreds and hundreds of people. Hopefully, we made a few new Browncoats.
Adam came upstairs to sit at his autograph-signing booth later in the evening. I'd brought along a couple of things to have him sign, but was floored when I was told that each signature cost $25. So I dithered for a while, then headed over and got there just as he was leaving for the night. And when I say 'just as', I mean that he had one leg over the barrier. I squeaked in protest and fortunately my Serenity t-shirt caught his attention and he didn't leave. Which means that Adam Baldwin has stared at my chest, heh. I wheedled an autograph out of him (free! - because the person who collected the money had gone by then) and then another for
sunnyd_lite, who had temporarily disappeared. And I got his pic (twice). He's a very nice and patient man, I can tell you.

When the exhibition hall closed,
sunnyd_lite and I went to the Royal York Hotel across the street (for the uninitiated, this is Toronto's answer to the Four Seasons) and had a drink in their swanky lounge. I was very dull and just had wine, while
sunnyd_lite was much more adventurous and chose a fancy pink martini garnished with a strawberry. We were planning to keep an eye out in case any celebrities were staying there and might wander by, but we got so involved in our conversation that they could have stood next to us and done a soft shoe and we wouldn't have noticed. That was Highlight #2 of the weekend and I hope to repeat that particular experience soon. ::blows kisses to
sunnyd_lite::
Then I went up to my hotel room and dreamed that I was Darla and that I was having a fling with Spike all night. Really. I'm not making that up.
Saturday was James Day. First up was the photo session - I stumbled downstairs to the line-up for that without spilling too much Tim Horton's tea all over myself and fortuitously wound up right next to
sunnyd_lite again.
Now comes a confession of sorts. You know how some people say they never forget a face? Well, I'm the complete opposite - I have to meet someone five or six times before I can be reliably sure that I recognise them for who they are. It makes watching movies rather difficult sometimes as I can't keep the characters straight unless they're actors I'm familiar with. I've often wondered if it's some weird form of dyslexia or something. Anyway,
sunnyd_lite played right into this by wearing her hair *up* on Saturday, whereas she'd had it *down* on Friday. Thus, when she waved hello, I wasn't completely sure if it was her or not. Eventually I figured out that it was, but not before I made an ass of myself. ::blushes::
I had plenty of time to burn her face into my memory forever, however, as we had to stand in line for a good hour and a half before we got our pictures taken with James.
So, yes, James! Was sitting on a stool in front of a professional photographer. I didn't actually know that this was what they meant by photo session - I thought I'd just be using my own camera. I was near the end of the line, so the poor fellow had been smiling and posing with strangers for an awfully long time by then, but you wouldn't have known it by him. He turned as I walked towards him, held out his hand, and said, "Hello! I'm so glad you came!" as if he'd been waiting to meet me all his life. Which struck me as funny, but it was nice of him to be so friendly. Then he put his arm around my shoulders and we grinned cheerily, thus producing the following:

I am so very not photogenic. Gah. And when did I become middle-aged?!? *sigh*
BTW, he has not put on an ounce since his television days and is generally smaller than I thought he'd be. I guess my brain figures that celebrity icons should be seven feet tall in real life.
And that was that. Next up was the Q&A, so it was upstairs to another line-up - thankfully for a much larger theatre, this time. There was loads of room and my camera proved entirely inadequate (again).

He told us straight out to ask any questions we liked and not to hold back. A little surprisingly, not that many questions were BtVS- or AtS-related. I did get the impression that he was rather dissatisfied with Spike's purpose (or lack thereof) in later seasons, but he certainly seemed grateful to have had the opportunity to play him in the first place. I thought it might be odd listening to him speak without the faux-English accent, but I got used to it quickly and then he just sounded like himself. Spike's mannerisms were all present and accounted for - there were lots of head tilts and shrugs and sly grins. And for those of you who always wondered, he likes to be on top. (Yes, someone asked him that.)
We had a long break after that, so I went back up to the Fantable. Adam was also upstairs signing autographs again. A blonde woman came over to the table to show us that he'd agreed to her request to sign her breast. At first, she said, he looked dubious, but then she baited him by saying, "Jayne would do it!" Hee! How could he say no after that?
A little while later, Adam made all our hearts go pitter-pat when he came over to see the Fantable. His arrival was rather amusing. We were talking to a young fellow and had just asked him who his favourite Firefly character was. He answered "Mal or Jayne" and then, not 60 seconds later, looked over his shoulder to see Adam standing next to him. He was a little startled, to say the least, as he hadn't even known that Adam was one of the guests.
Adam admired the displays, took a handful of keychains (he said he uses them as luggage tags), thanked us profusely for all our hard work, and then posed for pictures with us:

Don't we all looked rather flushed? :-) He also signed a pair of glass etchings of Jayne made by
styrofoam_guy that we were raffling off for charity. Then he gave each of us a hug (and me a kiss on the cheek!) before leaving. ::swoons::
Next up was the autograph session with James. This was by far the longest line-up yet and I didn't have
sunnyd_lite to talk to as she had a Silver pass and was going to Sunday's session. For once, I was surrounded by not very talkative people, so the wait was rather dull. I did finally make it to the table and got my Chance DVD signed. Maybe I'll be able to add Amber Benson's autograph to it someday. Anyway, since I was close enough to him for my camera to be co-operative, I took a pic of him signing for someone else. That's his manager, Steve, sitting to his right.

Then it was even more waiting as the concert didn't start until 10 pm. I thought that the exhibition hall would still be open, but it wasn't, so I wound up sitting in the lobby eating dinner bought from the chip truck outside. (Very nutritious.) They opened the door to the concert theatre early, so one of the attendees led a discussion on fanfic for a while. They also tried to figure out who had travelled farthest to get there - one woman was from Japan and another from England. Their trips paled in comparison to three guys who stood behind me in line on Friday, however. They'd come for the gaming tournament and took the bus from Victoria, British Columbia, to Toronto. Four days. 84 hours. On a *bus*. And they still had to get back again! Ugh.
A few minutes later, I ran into
blond_bear and followed her over to her seat. We'd been missing each other at the various events all day, so it was nice to chat with her for a while. Her picture with James turned out much better than mine and she got it signed by him at the autograph session.
The concert started and, once again, my little camera struggled with the distance from the stage, so I didn't get very good pics:

Having just bought his Civilized Man CD a few minutes before, I didn't really know any of the songs. Well, I knew one because
jedi_penguin included it on a CD that she made for me a few months ago, but that was it. I wasn't sure what to expect, singing-wise - I've read reviews that ranged from great to cringe-worthy. He was in pretty good voice on Saturday, though, so there was no cringing going on. Just as he was about to leave at the end, Steve called him back and made him stand and listen to us all sing "Happy Birthday" to him.

Think he's got enough of his shirt buttons undone? Hee!
And that was my day with James. It was cool meeting him and he seemed like a really nice guy. But honestly? I'm not sure that I'd pay the big bucks to repeat the experience. There was an unavoidable sense of being processed at each event, though he did do his best to personalise it for everyone as much as he could. You've definitely gotta give the guy credit for that. Still, I think I'd rather see the theatre thing in London that
frimfram and
bogwitch are going to. ::is jealous::
By Sunday morning, I felt as if I'd been beaten up and run over by a truck a few times, so it was a good thing that nothing opened until 11 am. I had no events scheduled that day, so spent it at the Fantable and wandering around the exhibition hall. I took some pics of other celebrities that I recognised - Marina Sirtis, Crispin Glover, and Margot Kidder - and decided to fork out the $25 for another Adam autograph. The first time, I got him to sign the promo card that we received at the June preview screening - now I've got both his and Sean Maher's signatures on it. This time, he signed the cover of the Firefly DVD with his picture on it. And I was wearing my Canadian Browncoats name tag, so he added "To Kristina!" at the top. Then I posed for yet another pic with him - you'll note that he is crouching down considerably to get his head at a level close to mine (unlike James, Adam is a huge man. And I am 5'2").

Is he yummy or what?
A whole bunch of people from the Fantable also went to get autographs and pictures taken at the same time as I did, so poor Adam had to deal with a gaggle of adoring fangirls for quite a while. Did I mention how nice and patient he is?
And I had to take this picture because of the (unknown) guy's t-shirt:

ETA: 'Unknown guy' is Canadian Browncoat Bang Ly.
I spent a little more time at the Fantable with
sunnyd_lite and
styrofoam_guy - I had a better picture that included the Fantable itself, but my camera ate it.

And then it was time to go and catch my train.
All in all, it was a delightful, if exhausting, weekend. I thoroughly enjoyed my time with
sunnyd_lite,
blond_bear,
lionnesss, and
styrofoam_guy, and hope to see them all again soon. Sadly, I didn't get to see much of
redeem147 and
hazyone101 as they had VIP passes and were thus very busy. Next time!

If a student asked me a question I couldn't answer, I'd have to go and ask the professor and then I wouldn't be able to remember who'd asked me in the first place.
Perhaps my self-perceived dowdiness has to do with the lusciousness of who I was posing with. :-)

Date: 2005-08-31 06:04 pm (UTC)Thanks for this lovely post! I got the chance to talk to Adam too but sadly no one was available to have my picture taken with him. I was at the Q&A and me and Val were the ones who got the "bye girls" when we left. Sadly, the Q&A overlapped with James' concert.

Hey, you have a Jayne icon! Have you made it through Firefly yet?

Date: 2005-08-31 08:34 pm (UTC)Yes, I've finished Firefly now - and can I just say it was a *shocking* decision to cancel it! What were they thinking?? I loved it to bits - truly fabulous show. I think Jayne is my favourite :-)

Date: 2005-08-31 08:43 pm (UTC)I've been through the series three times now and, like BtVS and AtS, it gets better with each viewing. Joss dialogue slays me and Serenity is, of course, Joss dialogue from beginning to end.
I had Adam Baldwin dreams all last night after that giant post. It was reeeeaally hard to get out of bed this morning!

It was great meeting you - and all the others - too. The weekend actually made me wish I lived in Toronto so that I could see you all at more shindigs, and I've never particularly wanted to live in Toronto before. But, sequel - right? :-)
