Joss pipes up again. Over at Whedonesque, there's a link to an interview with Nathan Fillion where he describes Serenity as being 'revenge'. Someone commented that Adam Baldwin refers to it as 'redemption' and wondered what terms the other cast members use. This was Joss's response:

Revenge for Nathan and redemption for Adam. That's them in a nutshell. I remember talking to everyone about it...

For me, it was recrudescence.

For Summer, a kind of rebirth.

Morena said it was a rebellion.

Sean thought it was pretty much a rehash.

Alan said it was almost like a rebar through the chest.

Ron: just a rerun.

Jewel thought it was a rehearsal, which explains all those retakes.

Gina really enjoyed "Reanimator".

...but I get there eventually.

I just discovered the 'More' button on the Disc 4 special features of the Firefly DVDs. Which means, after all this time, that I have finally seen the Gag Reel, heard Joss sing the theme song, and seen Adam Baldwin sing 'The Hero of Canton'.

Yeah, slow.

Speaking of slow, I also finally got my Serenity stuff! I only ordered it from the now-defunct website, um, four months ago? It came via Federal Express in an envelope marked 'urgent'.

At least I'm not the only one who's slow.

Hmmmmm? Will Firefly fly again?"

Jim and I spent New Year's Eve at a house party with some old friends - he met them in high school, while I met them shortly thereafter in my first year of university. Which means I have known them (and Jim, for that matter) for 23 years now. How in the world did I get to be this old?!?

Anyway, well after midnight and many glasses of wine and champagne, he and I retired to the local Holiday Inn for a kid-free night in a king-size bed. Jim started playing with the TV to see what movies were available and discovered that Serenity was one of them. And then we stayed up until 5 am watching it.

Thus, the answer to the question in the subject line: Very.

Post subject: Good Night and Good GOD there's something on my leg!

Ahh! Spider! Spider!

No wait. Lint.

Ahh! Lint! Malevolent lint!

Oookay, where was I? Um, time of sadness... transition... live forever in our hearts....

Sorry, I want this post to be really special, I'm just going through my notes. Be with you guys in a sec.

Ahhh... done the improbable... joke about dolphins... majestic DVD art... OH! Hey! Here we go:

Thanks a bunch.

Cool. I thought that went well. Some sentiment, but not maudlin... quality post. The one to go out on, if nobody notices my irrational fear of lint. I think the Browncoats will gain strength from my timely message, or from working out regularly. Anyway, my heart will go on. My liver's a house of cards, though, I kid you not.

Callous? Who said that? Maybe you're callous, mister TROLL! I'm not callous. I got the same feeling when I heard the board was closing down as every one else. But I'm old. Really, really old. Like, Keanu Reeves Old. (God, he's well preserved.) So I've seen this before. The Bronze. The Angelix. The Portly Norwegian Bondage House. All come and gone. What remains? Only two things. The first is Homestar Runner. Go Homestar! Teen Girl Squad! Let's get ready to look SOO GOOD!

The second, guess what, is love.

No flying lessons, don't worry, but what we get from the shows, the films, and the time on these boards -- from each other -- just can't get shut down. You guys gave me so much hope and support... and I gave you a movie so, you know, advantage me. But still. What this place was is sweet, what it will always be is treasured.

I got props for the Uni's for putting this up -- oh, and for making my damn (excuse me, BIG damn) movie. All things must pass. We'll find each other again, especially if any of you are portly, Norwegian and 'open-minded'.

I'll do my best to tell stories that cause as much trouble as this one did. And if I ever get the chance to return to this one... in case it was ever unclear due to shoddy journalism, sign me right the hell up.

You guys are the best crew flying.

Thanks a bunch.

-j.

The Browncoats site is being closed down on January 3. ::sniffs:: If you have points, be sure to redeem them for something in the store before then. If you need a top-up to have enough to get something, each click on the Browncoats blog will get you five points. I'm still waiting for the bandana I ordered several months ago.

A new forum has been set up at browncoats.serenitymovie.org/forums/. There's even a fanfiction thread. :-)

In completely unrelated news, Tim Horton's steeped tea? Is awful.

I figured it could go either way - either I'd get four copies of Serenity on DVD for Christmas or I'd get none.

None it was.

So I took a late lunch today and went to Future Shop 'cause you just can't expect me to wait any longer than I already have and they were sold out. Which - yay! - is a good thing, but also meant that I had to go next door to Walmart in desperation and ferret through the crowds and the mess and the full screen versions before I finally found what I wanted.

MINE!!

For those of you who have it, check out the Relighting the Firefly feature and note that the Canadian Browncoats are mentioned by name. :-)

And if anyone wants to make a screencap of that for me, I'd be much obliged.

Post subject: A Message for the Holidays

---------------------------------------------------------------------

So, here we are. So much has happened recently and I feel this is the time to pause and reflect before the New Year starts slapping us around.

We made the movie, it has come out on DVD just in time for that odd little Christian holiday where they celebrate not being fed to lions or something. It is number one on Amazon, and the old Firefly set is crawling back up the charts like a thirsty man in the desert towards a mirage. Does this make us better than anyone else? You bet it does. But it's not the kind of better than that causes you to look down your nose at anyone. It's more the kind that lets you pat someone patiently on the arm and say in a sanctimonious tone, "Mm hm, it's alright. I'll get you a copy of the movie and you can be cool, too. Just not quite as cool as me because I've been a Browncoat for sometime, now."

If you are like me, you watch the movie to assure yourself the future will be safe, you watch the extras to see old friends, and you listen to Joss' commentary and shed a little tear over good times. Waht's that? You don't cry in the commentary? Well, just have an emotion chip installed, you robot, and refill your eye bags with saline.

Be well, Browncoats. Aim high, as we have all learned that nothing is impossible (except getting Jewel and Morena to stop fighting over who is prettier when we all know it's me). Happy Holidays.

I've no idea how it translates into number of copies sold, but Serenity is still ranked #1 at Amazon and Firefly has moved up to #4. Shiny!

And he also posted to Whedonesque to debunk rumours that he's given up on the 'Verse.

...'cause it's out on DVD today. Yay! I'll either get 12 copies for Christmas or everyone will think that someone else has bought it for me and not get it at all. That's just the way of things.

Amazon has named Serenity this week's Biggest of the Big, which is cool. Also, at time of writing, it's ranked #1 at Amazon and Firefly is #6, which is even cooler.

Buy a copy for everyone you know and maybe we'll get a sequel yet.

The good news: Serenity will be released on DVD on December 20, just in time for Christmas.

The bad news: The DVD cover art.

I don't usually get my knickers in a knot about this sort of thing, but that is one UGLY cover. What's with the flamey horde in the lower half? There's nothing like that in the film. And Fireflies don't shoot lasers.

Why didn't they just use the movie poster?

It won't do any good, but you can sign an online petition to try to get the cover art changed if you feel so inclined.

Joss's latest post on the Browncoats site:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post subject: Joss made a post from typings!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hello, young lovers, wherever you are. This is Joss, coming to you live via technology. I thought it would be fair to give you all my little State of the Onion before I descend into the depths of the Warren to pound away at my keyboard, munch lettuce and ignore that annoying nerd Fiver who keeps saying something bad is coming, like he can tell or whatever. I'm excited to beat this Wonder Woman script into shape (and munch lettuce). Mostly, to be honest, I'm excited to (deliberately split infinitive) not be a Professional Serenity Barker. I love you guys, I loves me some Serenity cast, but I am yammered out. By Spain it just got surreal (I think Nathan and Summer will back me on that one). Selling is not my strong suit. Actually, my strong suit is Kevlar, but it bunches in all the wrong places.

So I have read much over the past weeks: we have Won! Lost! Triumphed! Failed! and have, of course, agreed with every single thing I read (one of the exhausting things about having no personality). But in the dark blue of early morning I do have some perspective, and it runs thus:

I'm very content. I think the movie is really good. That was hard to a) do and b) realize. The response has been terrific, the majority of the reviews extremely positive: people GOT IT. What's more, an impressive number of people saw this movie who never would have, and even more still will. This is not spin: I know we didn't do the expected numbers our first weekend, we didn't have an unprecedentedly small drop-off the second (which was my personal fantasy.) I've been to some dark places, just like you guys. But the movie has legs, and people who loved it LOVED it crazy, the way love is supposed to be. Europe has been a nice boost (and a lung-splitting shout out to my UK and Aussie UIPeeps -- they're dears, and efficient as hell). We'll keep soldiering on, until we can't crawl and we find DVD to carry us. I see us kind of like the Shawshank Redemption without all the Oscar nominations (unless Best Feet becomes a catagory). People who were befuddled by the title or lack of premise hook will finally pick it up, and keep picking it up... They may miss out on the big-screen exitement, but they'll see our little tale and take it to their hearts. Takes a while. Just like the show.

I've seen a couple of posts with Browncoats beating themselves up about not having done enough. I never want to hear that again. You guys have gone above and beyond above and beyond. The people who are above and beyond are looking at you guys and going "Man, don't they ever quit?" Your efforts, and your investment (emotional as well as tickety) have done an enormous amount for this film and my battered heart. No more self-flagellation, unless it's the healthy, what-every-young-person-needs-to-learn-about-their-body kind.

And what about Da Fyoocha? (And why did I need Arnold to say that?) I have no idea. It could be that this tale is told. Or it could be that down the line, dollars accumulate and some exec says, "let's spin that wheel again." Or who knows. I'm not resting my hopes on it, but it's not a concept I'll ever close the book on. In case the 30,000 reporters I told didn't get this message out, I love this crew like Nick loves Nora, like Hellboy loves Pancakes, like Bridgitte loves Bernie (and if you're old enough to get that reference, my condolences.)

Thank you all. I'll be in touch again, but I have an Amazon to rassle. Remember that this is not over; every dollar (or Euro) counts, every new convert is a friend for life. But don't fret too much on what's to come. Enjoy the remarkable things we've accomplished. You're Big Damn Fans. Have some lettuce.

All love, Joss.

I got a little teary reading that. How very much do I love this man? ::sniffs::

I finally made it up to 2000 points (well, 2005 points, actually) on the Browncoats site and just cashed them in for an official Serenity bandana. It was either that or chopsticks. I'm not entirely sure what I'm going to do with it, but it amuses me.
