What's For Dinner?
Oct. 5th, 2005 12:25 pmDevin Faraci, the fellow who declared Serenity DOA a couple of days ago, has made this offer:
"But tell you what - if Serenity drops less than 30% (that's 29% or less) this weekend, I will literally eat my words. I will print out my original article and eat it. I will photograph this event. That's my promise."
Hee! How much do I want to see this? GO SEE SERENITY THIS WEEKEND!
Full text of the article is here. Alot of it is not very flattering to Browncoats. *sigh* I guess every fandom has its lunatic fringe.

Orson Scott Card Reviews Serenity
Oct. 4th, 2005 11:12 amI don't really read much science fiction, though I did like Ender's Game.

We Need YOU!
Oct. 3rd, 2005 02:19 pmWell, the weekend take for Serenity looks to have been in the neighbourhood of $10 million US. I believe this figure includes only U.S. theatres. It was #2 at the box office this weekend behind Flight Plan (starring Jodie Foster). It actually out-performed Flight Plan in tickets per theatre as Flight Plan was showing in more than 1000 more theatres than Serenity.
The general consensus seems to be that these figures aren't great. Joss posted to the Browncoats board on Sunday:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post subject: Worst. Movie. Ever.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
was probably "Summer Holiday" with Mickey Rooney. Can you believe that kid was the biggest star in the world? Funny world.
Meanwhile, I'm just rounding out the weekend with a little praise for my dear peeps. Considering everything we've had to overcome, this is an extraordinary achievment. And you guys have been in the front lines. I lurk, I know all. So thanks. Some of you might know that this flick means more than a little to me.
Yes, the second weekend will tell all, as we've always known. I'm not here to push you guys -- you push yourselves way harder than I could anyway. I'm just trying to figure out how to get the message out to the guys that aren't you, that don't know any of you, and that don't run into someone who saw the film. I'll be hounding the extremely patient Uni execs on that very subject. Like the lady said, "People have to know".
It's not that there HAS to be a sequel. It's just that I've got so many IDEAS...
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
And again today (in response to an editorial on CHUD.com that said it's all over but for the weeping):
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Post subject: Well. Here I am.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So I was flouncing (that's lurking but fancier) about WHEDONESQUE (for which I have forgotten my password yet again) and I couldn't help but see the little CHUD.com hate-bomb that Devin wrote. I don't mind that he doesn't love the film, but things like "It failed in a big way" and "It's over" are about as charming -- and journalistic -- as "I was right." I am being totally realistic when I say the weekend grosses did not meet expectations -- but those expectations were based on models that don't apply to this situation because, seriously, nothing does. The industry is not calling this a failure, just a slightly soft version of a normal opening in a generally weak weekend.
[snip... Joss defending and loving his Browncoats... /snip]
We all know this remains an uphill battle. We all know that next weekend is crucial -- and a lot of it will rest on us. A lot will rest on the studio reaching people we can't. And factors we can't see coming. But I don't especially appreciate people calling Time of Death while I'm still operating. I don't like smug defeatism. And nobody disses the 'coats without me wading in. That's all.
The question remains: Did Early die out there in space, or did some passing ship show up at the last second? There's no answer yet, but I sure as hell know how I'd write it.
-j.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's a good film. Rotten Tomatoes currently has it at a 79% 'fresh' reading, compared to 37% for Flight Plan. Ebert and Roeper gave it two thumbs up. It's worth two hours of your time.
Go forth and make this weekend count.

I'm Gonna See Serenity by Dan Sehane. Download it at the link - it's pretty good.
"I'm gonna see Serenity,
Three times so that it makes lots of money,
They took our land, they took our love,
Well now they'll take our ticket stubs,
I'm gonna see Serenity..."
'Cause no one at Fox knew this show had no equal,
Come on, Universal, and green light a sequel!
"They couldn't take the sky from them,
Our Big Damn Heroes made a film..."
Hee!

Joss Speaks
Sep. 27th, 2005 03:21 pmJoss's latest post on the Serenity board:
Post subject: We few, we happy few...
Well boys and girls and boys dressed as girls and girls dressed as Kaylee, the time is almost upon us. This Friday we take that old rust-bucket out of the shipyard and see if she can breach atmo. It's been a long (to paraphrase a band I like) strange trip, and it'll be nice finally to show everybody what it is we've been tinkering with all this time. You already know you have my thanks, from the hardcore fans to the softcore... fans.... let me try that again. From the people manning the booths, buying DVD sets for their friends, getting banners seen everywhere on Australian TV, raffling artwork for ticketholders (Adam Hughes, take a bow), to the most casual fan who just wants to see the flick and won't ever even read this. You guys are the fuel in the engine, the Fire in the Fly, the weird green stuff coming out of Serenity's butt. (Hmmm. Forget that last one. I'm a little bit out of control here.)
Everyone needs something to keep them going. Mal has his ship. Zoe has her integrity. Jayne has Vera. And I've got you guys.
So what now? There have been so many posts about seeing it, seeing it again, the first weekend, the second weekend, being enthusiastic without being obnoxious (and yes, it IS hard to see over the pom-pom of a Jayne hat), buying tickets in advance, making a noise... I honestly wouldn't know what to add. I can tell you this: the movie will play in about 2200 hundred theaters, which is a good number. Too many, and you get empty theaters with no energy -- not enough, and you get, well, not enough. It may be hard to find in some areas but it'll be out there. Leave no multiplex unturned! This is going to be a ground war, peeps -- we have to hold the valley for a long while. However it opens, it needs to HOLD. Instead of the Alliance we'll be fighting viewer apathy, fear of something new, the urge to wait for DVD, and Jessica Alba in a bikini. (Although I have it on good authority that she spends 90% of the film in a huge wooly parka. Make sure that gets out.)
The day this puppy opens, I'll be seeing it with my family (don't worry, there's a lot of them, and they're all paying) and then I'm off to Europe to learn the word 'Browncoats' in nine different languages -- 'cause like I said, it's all about holding. I'll never be far from a computer, though, so I can check in with y'all. Thanks for every damn thing.
And remember, amidst all the urgency to make this an event, all the work and the worry, to take two hours and just enjoy yourself. That is, after all, what all this fighting's about.

Firefly/Serenity Misc.
Sep. 13th, 2005 12:44 pmGleaned from Whedonesque:
Someone purports to be in possession of the notepad that 'Dr. Joss' was writing on during the River Tam sessions. Complete with still-sticky fake blood. There's some debate over whether it's the real thing or not, but the stuff written in it seem rather Joss-like. (Notepad contents are spoilery on the same level as the trailers and River Tam sessions themselves.)
Several months ago,
akin discovered the ambulance from Ariel in a scrap yard. An Ariel Ambulance Yahoo group has been started to raise enough money to buy, store, and display it.
And, finally, Joss was recently asked which five people he would take to a desert island. His answers:
1. Jane Austen because "she was my first", with the proviso that she bathed first because "they didn’t do that back then."
2. Caligula because "someone has to be the master of ceremonies."
3. Emma Thompson because he's entirely intrigued by her.
4. Himself.
5. George Bush. "Because we’ll need something to eat."

Ottawa Browncoats
Sep. 9th, 2005 09:31 pmI've decided to rally Browncoats in the Ottawa area and hopefully get to know them a little better:
We had a screening of Serenity here in town last night - I think it was a press screening or something like that. In any event, we were sent a bunch of tickets from the List Mom of the Canadian Browncoats and ninety local Browncoats showed up and enjoyed the film most thoroughly. At SFX, Adam Baldwin mentioned that the film had been edited since it was last seen in June and was much tighter now. I didn't really notice that many differences myself, but that may simply be a function of encroaching senility on my part. I did, however, notice a continuity error:
( Continuity Error Under The Cut - Also Big Damn Spoilers! )
After the movie, we went to Buffalo Charlie's, a local restaurant, for a post-movie Shindig. A fun time was had by all.
If you know anyone in Ottawa who's a fan of Firefly/Serenity, point them my way and have them sign up.

Serenity Viral Marketing
Sep. 6th, 2005 10:32 pmProbably everyone knows about this now, but I figured I'd post anyway. The last excerpt of the River Tam sessions has been posted:
http://www.session416.com/
Click on 'The Complete Sessions' to watch all five excerpts in the right order and find out some of what happened to River before Simon rescued her. A little spoilery for the movie, but no more than the trailers.
Seriously creepy. That Joss is one sick puppy.
Which is just one of the reasons I love him so. :-)

Serenity Video
Sep. 2nd, 2005 09:47 pmI'm starting to feel a bit split-personality jumping between Katrina and Serenity...
Check out this Serenity vid set to the tune of I Need A Hero by Bonnie Tyler. It's brilliant. How much do I love the words "He's gotta be larger than life" playing over the visual of the mud statue of Jayne? Hee! I also have a particular fondness for one of the choruses starting "I need a hero" with a shot of Wash protecting Kaylee. I adore Wash.
Makes me want to watch the whole series all over again. Because three times in six months is just not enough.
Obsessive much? Not me!
"What does that make us?"
"Big damn heroes, Sir."
"Ain't we just!"

Serenity Character Game
Sep. 1st, 2005 03:29 pmHee - there's a silly game going on over at IMDb where 'health' points are taken from one character and given to another. Everyone starts with 10 and when a character falls to zero, they're dead. So far, the Operative, Jayne, River, and Book are dead. Zoe's on the chopping block! Go save her!

I got all the trivia questions right except one, though I admit a couple were guesses. And I beat Mal at horseshoes, but still haven't managed to win the 'hard' level of 'Know Your Enemy'.
